About Sodium

Sodium rewrites Minecraft’s chunk rendering. Most players see higher and more stable frame rates, especially on integrated graphics, with no visual changes.

It replaces the Video Settings screen with its own, grouped into General, Quality, Performance and Advanced pages.

Configuration

Settings live in Options → Video Settings. If you get rendering artifacts, the Advanced page has options to try, but the defaults suit most systems. The settings file is config/sodium-options.json.

Compatibility

Minecraft versions with at least one release on Modrinth, synced 2026-11-07. Always download the file that names your exact version and loader.

How to install Sodium

Install on NeoForge
  1. Install NeoForge for the Minecraft version you want (1.21.1 – 26.3 supported). See how to install mod loaders.
  2. Download the Sodium file for your exact Minecraft version and NeoForge from an official source.
  3. Put the .jar files in the mods folder of your game directory or instance.
  4. Launch the NeoForge profile. Check the Mods menu to confirm Sodium loaded.
Install on Fabric
  1. Install Fabric for the Minecraft version you want (1.16.3 – 26.3 supported). See how to install mod loaders.
  2. Download the Sodium file for your exact Minecraft version and Fabric from an official source.
  3. Most Fabric mods also need Fabric API; this one does not declare it, so only add it if another mod asks for it.
  4. Put the .jar files in the mods folder of your game directory or instance.
  5. Launch the Fabric profile. Check the Mods menu to confirm Sodium loaded.
Install on Quilt
  1. Install Quilt for the Minecraft version you want (1.18.2 – 1.20.6 supported). See how to install mod loaders.

Notes for Sodium

  • Do not install OptiFine alongside Sodium. For shaders, add Iris.

Common problems and fixes

Crash on launch after adding Sodium with OptiFine.

Remove OptiFine. Sodium and OptiFine replace the same renderer and cannot run together.

Another mod's blocks render wrong or invisible.

Update both mods. Older Sodium releases needed an extra compatibility mod for some rendering features; check the other mod's page for what it requires with your Sodium version.

Does Sodium work on Forge?

The official project supports Fabric, Quilt and, on recent versions, NeoForge. Check the compatibility table for your version. It does not support classic Forge.

Does Sodium change gameplay?

No. It only changes how the game is drawn.
