About Just Enough Items (JEI)

JEI is the recipe viewer most modpacks ship with. It adds a searchable item list next to your inventory and shows every crafting, smelting and machine recipe that mods register with it.

Search supports prefixes: @ filters by mod name and # by tooltip text, which makes finding items in a large pack fast.

Configuration

Open JEI’s settings from the config button below the item list or from the Mods menu. Common changes: hide the list by default, change search behaviour, and turn cheat mode on or off in creative worlds.

Compatibility

Minecraft versions with at least one release on Modrinth, synced 2026-11-07. Always download the file that names your exact version and loader.

How to install Just Enough Items (JEI)

Install on NeoForge
  1. Install NeoForge for the Minecraft version you want (1.20.4 – 26.3 supported). See how to install mod loaders.
  2. Download the Just Enough Items (JEI) file for your exact Minecraft version and NeoForge from an official source.
  3. Download the required dependencies listed above for the same version: MezzConfig.
  4. Put the .jar files in the mods folder of your game directory or instance.
  5. Launch the NeoForge profile. Check the Mods menu to confirm Just Enough Items (JEI) loaded.
Install on Forge
  1. Install Forge for the Minecraft version you want (1.8 – 1.21.1 supported). See how to install mod loaders.

  4. Most Fabric mods also need Fabric API; this one does not declare it, so only add it if another mod asks for it.

  6. Launch the Fabric profile. Check the Mods menu to confirm Just Enough Items (JEI) loaded.

Common problems and fixes

The item list does not appear in inventories.

The overlay can be hidden. Press Ctrl+O (default) to toggle it, or check the key bindings in Controls.

Recipes from a mod are missing.

The mod has to register its recipes with JEI. Update both mods; if it still happens, report it to the other mod's author.

Frequently asked questions

What are the default keys?

Hover over an item and press R to see its recipes or U to see its uses. A adds a bookmark. All keys can be changed in Controls.

Can I use JEI with REI or EMI?

They do the same job, so most players pick one. Some packs run them together, but expect overlapping overlays.
